Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain: “Can’t Make Head nor Tail of It”

This week, the Investment Quorum team were up bright and early to welcome guests from our professional networks to our inaugural Private Breakfast Briefing at The Ivy City Garden on Old Broad Street. Our guests enjoyed a delicious two-course breakfast in the elegant surrounding of The Ivy. With plenty of tea and coffee on hand, as well as an incredible discussion on blockchain and cryptocurrencies, facilitated by Noelle Acheson, Cryptoasset researcher, lecturer and writer for Coindesk.

Noelle’s thought-provoking presentation outlined the what and why of cryptocurrency, including why professionals should not only know about it but also understand the barriers to its progress.

Who, exactly, is right when it comes to cryptocurrencies?

Warren Buffet, the billionaire chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, reiterated his negative view on Bitcoin at the company’s annual shareholder meeting, comparing it with rat poison. Mr Buffet has often compared the cryptocurrency to gold, saying that both assets are strictly speculative and don’t produce earnings and dividends as stocks do.

On the other hand, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has expressed a cautiously optimistic opinion in the past.  “Bitcoin is exciting because it shows how cheap it can be,” the billionaire told Bloomberg in 2014. “Bitcoin is better than currency, in that you don’t have to be physically in the same place and, of course, for large transactions, currency can get pretty inconvenient.”

The debate and discussion that followed Noelle’s talk was fascinating and illuminating and guests left the briefing with a greater knowledge of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies along with an insight to how, potentially, it could affect the future of currency as we know it.

Our next event

Due to the overwhelming success of this inaugural event, we look forward to hosting more private briefing events for our peers in the industry as we believe that educating our team and networks on emerging technologies and new options for our industry are critical to our success.
